Springtimemakeup

As a makeup artist, I have had the pleasure of being able to experiment with all types of beauty products, from high end department store brands, to tried and true drugstore products.  I have always been baffled when people assume that drugstore beauty doesn't provide the same look as higher end product lines.  Ladies, this is simply not true!  To prove my point, I recently worked with Walgreens to create two looks using afew special products, and makeup tricks: L’Oreal Butterfly Mascara, L'Oreal Colour Riche Lip Stain, L'oreal Miracle Blur Eye Cream, and NIVEA - A Kiss of Care & Color Lip Care.

For the first look above, I wanted to keep the look clean and simple. Something that we all could do with little to no time! The main two products that make the look are deep, dark lashes by L'Oreal Butterfly mascara, and a soft peachy pink lip stain by L'oreal Colour Caresse Wet Stain in Pink Resistance. This pink is one of my absolute top picks for Spring.  And I have become obsessed with the staying power! Keep the rest of the face clean, and the eyeshadow simple by using a soft, shimmery beige.

The next look is another easy to achieve evening look using just a few products. One of my favorite tricks for a quick evening look is to find the perfect red lip, and a dark voluminous mascara.  Once again, I relied on L'Oreal Butterfly mascara to do the trick!  Before starting your makeup application, I also highly suggest using a eyeshadow primer, and the L'Oreal Miracle Blur Eye Cream is as close to perfection as you can get.  I tried this out based on a recommendation from none other than the amazing (and I mean fantabulous) Billy B. Since he perfects the faces of every movie star imaginable, I take every tip he dishes out as gold!  This eye cream helps to brighten up the eye, blur wrinkles, and allow your makeup to last.  Flawless perfection.   Add a swipe of liquid eyeliner, and your eye look is Catwoman worthy.  The final step is, of course, the red lippy.  My pick was L'Oreal Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Endless Red.  It is the perfect cool red that makes me feel glamorous. And, because it is a stain you don't have to worry about the dreaded lipstick on the teeth horror show.

*Extra Tip: When using a lip stain, always prep your lips with a lip balm to hydrate and protect.  My choice was Nivea- A kiss of care & color lip care. Not only does it give your lips a boost of moisture, but it leaves a touch of color, making it the perfect lip base.  I keep mine in purse, and have become addicted to Kiss of Sheer Berry.

Top Three Beauty Balms for Your Buck

Share on Twitter7 Share on Facebook0 Share on Pinterest4 Share on Google +11

bestbbcreams

by Sian Bitner Kearney:

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you’ve probably heard of and even tried a BB (beauty balm) cream. They promise better, brighter, and more even tones skin, and are supposed to offer great coverage without the traditional heavy feel of a foundation. However, with so many on the market today, how’s a girl to choose? No worries! We have our top three picks for the best beauty balms for your money.
Estee Lauder Day Wear Beauty Benefit Crème
The issue many people have with beauty balms is shine. If you have oily skin and use a typical balm, you may not only feel like you have an oil slick on your t-zone by lunch, you could also suffer a break out. Thank goodness for this balm! It contains light moisturizers to help skin glow and hyaluronic acid to heal and prevent acne and keep shine at bay.
Dr. Brandt Signature Flexitone BB Cream
This balm is perfect for those who feel their skin is suffering from a serious case of the winter blues. The coverage is not super thick, but it does provide a very luminous glow making your skin look healthier and instantly gorgeous!
Stila Stay All Day 10 in 1 Beauty Balm
If you’re looking for a little more coverage as well as an anti-aging balm, this is your go-to balm! Not only does this one stay in place all day without shine, it also contains microspheres that help to blur imperfections and smooth fine lines.
So whatever your poison, at least give the new BB creams a try. With wintery days still among us, every girl’s skin could use a little extra TLC and a tiny boost of beautiful!

MirandaLambertGrammysOne of my favorite looks during Sunday nights Grammy awards was the classic glamour of Miranda Lambert.  Now, anyone who knows me knows how much I adore Miranda.  Loooove her music and her sass.  And yes, you can hear me singing "Mama's Broken Heart" during most shower singing sessions.

Her fabulous makeup artist Terri Apanasewicz shared with us how she achieved her look, and the trends she saw on the red carpet.

Step-by-Step on How to Get Miranda’s Red Carpet Look:

FACE:

  • I prepped Miranda’s skin with Olay’s new Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream
  • Applied Makeup Forever HD foundation
  • Used Amazing Concealer to highlight under the eyes
  • Set with Amazing Cosmetics Powderset
  • With a beveled blush brush I applied YSL Cream blush Audacious Orange” to the apple of the cheek.

EYES:

  • For her eyes I used MAC Brownluxe shadow palette, the bronze color over the entire lid adding the gold to the inner corner of the lid.
  • I used the dark brown to defing the crease of the eye. Using the bronze color again underneath the bottom lashes.
  • Added false lashes and mascara

LIPS:

  • Then I finished off Miranda’s “Old Hollywood Glamour” look with Stila’s long wear lip pencil in “Passionate” and topped it off with Tarte’s LipSurgence in “lust”

Trends Terri Saw On The Red Carpet:
- Luminous skin on Miranda Lambert, Chrissy Teigan, Ciara...even Kevin Hart ;)
- Bold, red lip on Madonna, Kelly Osborne and Colbie Calliat
- Dark eyes and a nude lip on Taylor Swift and Rita Ora

Hair How-To: Kate Beckinsale

Share on Twitter9 Share on Facebook1 Share on Pinterest4 Share on Google +11
Hair How to

by Sian Bitner Kearney:

I’ll admit it; I’m absolutely obsessed with Kate Beckinsale’s hair. The color…the cut…the way it seems perfectly coiffed at all times of the day. Her hair is, at least in my opinion, the absolute combination of sassy and sexy, but how the heck does the average woman achieve it? That question may be easier to answer than you think. Follow these steps for Kate worthy locks of your own!

Length:
Obviously the first notable thing about Kate’s hair is the length. If you’re like me and are lacking about 5” in that department, extensions may be the answer to your prayers. If you fear long-term hair commitment, try clip in extensions. They can be purchased at almost any beauty supply store for about $75, and if the shade isn’t a perfect match, they can be dyed and highlighted to mirror your natural hair color. For more of a permanent fix, glue in extensions can be added to the hair by your stylist (for about $400+), making longer locks a full-time look you can flaunt.

Color:
Kate’s hair has varied over the years in its shade but usually settles somewhere between a medium reddish and medium golden brown. Lately, she has been sporting some gorgeous caramel colored, ombre’ highlights to add some warmth to the look. To avoid hair color disaster, visit your stylist for the perfect shade of brown based on your own natural color, and then request that he or she apply balayage highlights.

Style:
For full-on glam curls like Kate’s, start by parting hair down the middle. Next, you will need a large barrel, clipless curling iron. Section out your hair just above the ear and pull that top half up and secure with a clip. Starting with the bottom half, take 1” sections and wrap around the iron in the direction that is away from your face. Once the bottom half is completely curled, spray with hairspray to hold. Repeat the steps on the top half of your hair. Allow all curls to cool for 15 minutes, then bend forward and tousle with your fingers. Apply smoothing serum like Moroccan Oil to any frizzy areas and finish the look with another shot of hairspray. For a look that’s totally Kate, pair with a smoky eye and pink lips!

Easy Beauty Tips by Kimara Ahnert

Share on Twitter9 Share on Facebook4 Share on Pinterest0 Share on Google +11

kimaraahnert

This week, we are thrilled to share makeup tips from New York City’s Premiere Makeup Artist, Kimara Ahnert. Whether you have a black-tie event or are just having dinner with your sweetheart, try some of Kimara’s rules of thumb for a flawless high-definition make up look.

Perfect the Pout
Hollywood’s glam girls are notorious for never leaving home without a full, defined and kissable pout. Many women struggle to recreate the look in real life, but it’s easier than you think. “To create full lips, while brushing your teeth, brush lips to exfoliate and create a fuller pout. Then line lips outside of the natural lip-line, fill with your favorite lipstick and then dab a pearlescent lip gloss to the center of the lip for added va-voom!”

It’s All in the Eyes
Kimara acknowledges the impression eye makeup can make and believes, “to create good camera eyes use shimmering shades of champagne, neutral, gold and copper. The sheen shows off the sparkle within eyes and imparts the most impact.”

Contour with Color
For a more glamorous look, Kimara says, “no matter what, always have a pop of color somewhere – blush, lip or eye shadow color.” To create a serious hi-def look, Kimara regularly likes to apply bronzer to the cheeks to warm up the skin and then add a pop of blush color. By doing this you can easily camouflage imperfections and enhance your beautiful cheek bones. Apply some highlighting powder to the top of your cheek bones, temples, décolletage and shoulders for an extra-bright look.

Get The Look: Jennifer Lopez

Get the Look Jlo

by Sian Bitner Kearney

Even way back in the days of dancing on In Living Color (that’s right, Jlo was a Fly Girl), there was just something about Jennifer Lopez. Her skin literally glows as if she’s hired someone to follower her with perfect lighting, and no matter what hair and makeup she rocks, the look is always sexy, sophisticated, and impeccable. One of Jlo’s most recent knockout looks was the one she sported at the 2013 Golden Globes. It’s fresh, sexy, and appropriate for all skin tones. Here’s what you’ll need to recreate the look for yourself.

Face:

For skin that’s as flawless as Jlo’s, it’s all about a great foundation. Look for one that covers flaws and redness without looking cakey. You’ll want and airbrushed effect here. One of our favorites for this look is Napoleon Perdis Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation. Set the look with a loose, neutral powder like Bare Minerals’ Mineral Veil.

Contour:

Jlo’s makeup looks are all about highs and lows, so never forget about bronzer and highlighter. For this look, try a neutral bronzer like NARS Bronzing Powder in the shade, “Laguna”. Apply with a contouring brush just under the cheekbones, the forehead, bridge of the nose, and a touch on the chin. You can also use the bronzer the cast shadows on double chins or to accentuate collar bones. Next, grab a highlighter like Benefit’s High Beam and apply to cheekbones, inside corners of the eyes, brow bones, and cupids bow.

Cheeks:

The cheeks in this look do not require too much pop, so stick with a light pink blush like Bobbi Brown’s in the shade, “Slopes”.

Eyes:

The eyes are the focal point of the look and the look is smoky and sultry. Start with a light, shimmering gray tone. Use this color from the top lash line to just above the crease and under the bottom lash line. Next use a medium/dark gray shade, and apply to the crease of the eyelids extending just past the corners. DUWOP’s Eyes Gray Eyes Palette is an excellent choice since it contain several shades of gray; one for every skin tone. Next use dark brown eyeliner like Revlon’s ColorStay in, “Black/Brown”, and line the top lashline from corner to corner and lightly line the bottom waterline. Finally, apply several coats of black, thickening mascara to the upper lashes. We love Benefit’s, They’re Real Mascara for true bombshell lashes.

Lips:

Finish this look with a beautiful, caramel lipgloss like Sephora’s Glossy Gloss in the shade, “Maple Syrup”, and you’re ready to rock the town Jlo style!

Get Beautiful in Your Sleep

Beauty Sleep
By Valli Herman for The Style Glossy

In the movies, the heroine always wakes up looking perfectly refreshed and gorgeous. Sure, she may have Hollywood magic on her side, but the rest of us have a potent beauty weapon too: sleep!

It turns out, there really is such a thing as beauty sleep. “Sleep allows the body to go into several stages of non-REM and REM cycles for restoration of body functions,” says Dr. Vermén M. Verallo-Rowell, a research dermatologist. Further, the emerging science of chronobiology -- the study of the impact of biological rhythms and their effects on the body -- has uncovered subtle differences in skin behavior at night. The skin is more permeable; it expends fewer defenses against the daytime’s free radicals, pollution and sun damage; and oil production is lower. All these changes help active ingredients absorb more effectively at 2 a.m. than at 2 p.m.

Here’s a guide to the types of treatments and products that work their magic in the dark.

Hair Conditioners
Sometimes called “deep conditioners” or “reparative masks,” these temporary leave-on hair products can work even better when they’re allowed hours, not minutes, to absorb deeply into the hair shaft. Before bedtime, massage the mask along the ends and mid-shaft of dry hair and comb through. Rinse and style as usual in the morning.

Heavy-duty Moisturizers
Quick-absorbing, lightweight hydrators with built-in sunscreen are perfect for protecting the skin during the day and providing a satiny base for your makeup. Nighttime is when you’ll want to slather on the thicker, richer, more emollient moisturizers that may look greasy but provide more reparative moisture benefits. This deeply penetrating moisture can have a carryover benefit into the daytime.

Retinoids
Dermatologists suggest that patients use over-the-counter and stronger prescription retinoids (tretinoin, tazarotene, adapalene) only at night because these topical forms of vitamin A can degrade in light and make the skin more vulnerable to sun damage and more likely to burn. “They have become the gold standard of what dermatologists recommend to help exfoliate, lighten brown spots, stimulate collagen production and clean out pores,” says Dr. D’Anne Kleinsmith, a Michigan cosmetic dermatologist.

Active Treatment Products
Many treatment products work best when they’re not competing with layers of cosmetics and sunscreen, says Dr. Patricia Farris, a Louisiana dermatologist. What’s more, active ingredients such as salicylic acid, which exfoliates dead skin cells, as well as peptides -- tiny proteins that stimulate collagen to help reduce the signs of aging -- are most effective when they’re not being diluted by perspiration or fending off daytime environmental stressors like pollution and sunlight. The increased blood flow to skin at night, along with nocturnal water loss, may help these ingredients better penetrate the skin’s barrier layers.

Rough-skin Erasers
Products made to soften rough skin on the feet or hands are likely to get the best results if they’re applied at bedtime. Many include alpha hydroxy acids (lactic, glycolic and citric acids) that penetrate the outermost layer of skin to promote exfoliation. Or, try this softening treatment suggested by Dr. C. Ralph Daniel III, clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center: Soak hands and feet in room-temperature water for up to five minutes. Apply an extra-thick moisturizer, such as shea butter or petroleum jelly. For the best overnight penetration, pull on a pair of light cotton gloves or socks.

Antiperspirant
Some extra-strength antiperspirants are specially formulated for nighttime use, but a regular formula can also be more potent during the night’s optimum conditions. “For people who have problems with excessive perspiration, it makes a lot of sense to apply an antiperspirant before you go to bed,” says Kleinsmith. “When you’re not already perspiring, you can block the sweat glands more easily and let the medication work more effectively.”
