5 Hair Care Mistakes You’re Making

5 Hair Care Mistakes You’re Making

Think your daily hair care routine is full of healthy hair choices? You may be surprised to discover that you’re unwittingly wreaking havoc on your tresses. Eliminate these five common mistakes and give your hair the TLC it deserves.

1. Rushing from dryer to flat iron. Following a hasty blow dry with a flat or curling iron to perfect a style is likely to sizzle your strands. “Women often use hot tools on their hair when it still has some moisture remaining,” says Jenny Strebe, hair stylist and blogger at Confessions of a Hairstylist. Ironing wet hair increases the risk of breakage. Wait a few minutes after your blow dry to make sure hair is 100 percent dry.

2. Drying when sopping wet. Putting a blow dryer to dripping wet hair is a very bad idea. Want to know what’s even worse? Using a round brush on hair that’s sopping wet, says Strebe. That friction frays the cuticle, leading to hair that’s damaged and flat. To keep hair healthy, blot it with a towel, then allow it to air dry until it’s about 80 percent dry. Now you can pick up that round brush and use your favorite styling technique to get super volume and shine.

3. Doing the wet pony. When we’re busy, it’s easy to throw freshly shampooed hair up into a high bun or pony. The lack of heat and brushing may be a plus, but wet ponytails and buns have a steep downside of their own. Tugging and pulling fragile wet hair, then whipping it with an elastic, is a fast track to split ends. Instead, try a loose braid or a rough finger blow dry.

4. Rough handling knotty tresses. Tangled hair should be brushed out, right? Not so fast. Brushing through knots can cause pieces -- or even the entire knot -- to break. Start at the tips -- never the roots -- using a wide-toothed comb and gently work through those knots. For hair that’s prone to snagging and snarling, apply a leave-in spray detangler after your shampoo.

5. Washing your color away. A whopping 75 percent of women color their hair in some form. To keep locks at their healthiest and color at its prettiest, always use a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for color-treated hair. And wait 24 to 48 hours after you color your hair before you shampoo or else that gorgeous fresh hue will be swirling right down the shower drain.

Trend Alert: Top Three Anti-Aging Hair Treatments to Try ASAP!

When it comes to anti-aging products for the face, most women have had their favorite product picked out and well stocked since practically birth. However, there is a new concept in the world of anti-aging and this one has nothing to do with your skin. Instead, the new focus is the hair; restoring youthful texture, bounce and shine and even preventing frizziness and damage. While these amazing elixirs can be found everywhere from your local drugstore to your tried and true salon, here are our top three picks that you definitely need to try!

#1 - Kerastase Initialiste Advanced Scalp and Hair Concentrate - $60
Even though this product is arguably a bit on the pricey side, you certainly do get what you pay for. The product is in a serum form, and a little goes a very long way. Use it to ban dry, frizzy ends, to add thickness to fine and thinning hair or even to add some extra luster to hair that’s been looking a bit dull lately.

#2 - Alterna Caviar Cream - $25
This magic maker is a cream fomula and packs a pretty powerful punch for the price. It can be used as a leave in conditioner to protect against heat styling, or used after hair is styled to give a bit of hold, to smooth out rough ends, and provide some serious shine.

#3 - Pantene BB Cream - $6
If you’re looking for a budget friendly product that still gets the job done, this should be your go-to product. The Pantene BB Cream actually promises to do more than just protect and add shine, it claims to do 10 (that’s right – 10) different and wonderful things for your hair such as: repair rough hair, protect against damage, make hair silkier, provide a brilliant shine, smooth the hair shaft, provide extra moisture to the hair, control frizz, provide heat protection, make hair more manageable and tame flyaways. With this many pros coupled with a seriously affordable price, we can’t think of a single reason why this shouldn’t be at the top of every woman’s beauty drawer.

Trend Alert: Hair Trends to Follow for 2014

Trendsetting Hair

by Sian Bitner Kearney:

It may be hard to believe, but 2014 is nearly here. While your calendar for November and December may be centered around parties and presents, don’t forget about the latest and greatest in hair trends for the New Year. We have the top three hair trends, straight from Fashion Week, to help you start your New Year right.

#1 - The Low Pony
Few styles are as sleek and elegant as the low pony tail but we love this look for two more reasons; it’s quick and easy! Whether you’re darting out the door for a 7:00 am meeting or making a quick transition from a day of errands to an evening with friends, the low pony is the easiest way to freshen up your look in about two minutes flat. Whether loose or tight, your pony should hang right around the nape of the neck. If you really want to spruce things up, use a decorative clip  or band to secure your pony tail or add a headband to the front of the hair.

#2 – Deep Side Part
Most stylists will agree that something as simple as where you part your hair can completely change your look without needing to do anything else, and that is certainly the case with the deep side part. While this look may take some getting used to, especially for those who have spent the past several years rocking the center part, trust us; it’s totally worth it! For an elegant look, try the deep side part with retro waves ala Veronica Lake. For some Rock n Roll flare, use a Texturing Hair Spray  and back comb to create fullness from mid-length down.

#3 – Rockn’ Waves
Think funky waves are just for the beach? Well think again! 2014 is all about those textured bed head waves but with a bit more volume than the ones of summer. This looks works well with both a deep side part and a center part, but the key word to remember is “wave”. Polished, pretty curls are not what you’re going for so keep those waves natural looking. Try a flatiron to create great waves if you have naturally straight hair. For girls with a natural wave, scrunch in a good Texturing Hair Spray  and call it a day. The wilder the better, so don’t forget to pump up the volume on this look and certainly don’t forget the hairspray to lock it all in.

Get The Look: Kiera Knightly or Marie Claire

Share on Twitter0 Share on Facebook0 Share on Pinterest0 Share on Google +11

I have always loved Kiera Knightly, and her old world beauty. I especially love her newest look, and was able to get the low down on how to recreate her hairstyle.

For this month’s Marie Claire cover, Keira Knightly was styled by Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Fashion & Celebrity Stylist Ben Skervin.

THE LOOK: A roughed up, simplistic bed head style with soft, natural looking elements. The face framing layers and fresh look had a rock ‘n’ roll edge that complemented her cool and modern style. Here’s how Ben suggests getting this look:

1.      First start out by prepping wet hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse for lightweight volume.
2.      Rough dry hair, using fingers to give texture and make hair appear less finished.
3.      Part hair on the side. Then take a small amount of Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Color Gloss Crème and scrunch into the ends of the hair, creating soft waves and a textured finish.
4.      Finish the look with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Extra Firm Hold Hairspray to hold the style in place.

GHD Hair Straightener

GHD Gold Professional 1/2″ Styler

I have complained and whined in many a blog about the ongoing battle I have with my hair.  Although I adore being a natural redhead, I loathe the fact that I have the biggest head of hair this side of Texas!  It’s big.  Pageant queen big.  And it takes an army of hair tools to get it to flatten, smooth, and be de-poofed!

Paul Mitchel Super Skinny

Being half Italian and half Scottish I have the weirdest combination hair ever!!  It’s red, crazy thick, and doesn’t know if it wants to be wavy or straight.  It’s big…Miss. America big!  I am always flat-ironing, blow drying, and putting all sorts of de-frizzing products in my hair to tame the beast.

Well, thanks to Self’s “best of beauty” recommendation, I decided to give Paul Mitchel Super Skinny Serum a try and I am hooked.  It has cut my drying time in half, and even makes my hair calmer and less poofy when I air dry it.
